Accelerate the Implementation of Sustainable Development

Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water

and sanitation for all

The General Assembly ,

Reaf firm ing its resolut ion 70/1 of 25 Septe mber 2015, entitle d “Tra nsformin g

our worl d: t he 2 030 A genda for Susta inable Deve lopment ”, i n wh ich it adopted a

comp rehensiv e, fa r-reachi ng and peopl e-centr ed set of universa l and transf ormativ e

Sust ainable D evelopm ent Goa ls and ta rgets, its commi tment to working tireless ly for

the f ull impl ementati on of th e A genda by 2030, i ts recog nition th at eradi cating

pove rty i n al l its for ms an d di mension s, in cluding extr eme poverty, is the greates t

glob al cha llenge and an in dispens able r equirem ent fo r su stainab le de velopme nt, it s

comm itment to achie ving sustain able develo pment in its three dime nsions –

econ omic, social and envir onmenta l – in a ba lanced and integr ated manner, and to

buil ding up on the achie vements of t he Mil lennium Devel opment Goals and s eekin g

to ad dress th eir unf inished business ,

Reaf firming al so its resol ution 69/3 13 of 27 July 20 15 on the Addis Ababa

Acti on Agenda of the Th ird Inter nationa l Confer ence on F inancin g for Dev elopmen t,

whic h is a n integr al part of th e 2030 Agenda for Sus tainable Devel opment, suppor ts

and complem ents it , helps to co ntextual ize its means of i mplemen tation targets with

conc rete pol icies a nd actio ns, and reaffirm s the s trong p olitical commit ment to

addr ess the challeng e of fin ancing and crea ting an enablin g enviro nment a t all lev els

for s ustainab le deve lopment in the spirit of global partner ship a nd solid arity,

Reca llin g its resol ution 77/33 4 o f 1 Se ptember 202 3, in which it decide d t o

conv ene the 202 6 United N ations Water Conferen ce to Accele rate the Im plement ation

deve lopment , includin g the empo wermen t of women, and a vital e lement of a chievin g

the Sus tainable Deve lopment Goals and oth er rel evant goal s in the so cial,

envi ronment al and e conomic fields,

Noti ng with conce rn that the wo rld is not on trac k t o achieve wa ter-rel ated

Sust ainable Develop ment Go als and targets a t the gl obal le vel by 2 030 at t he curr ent

rate of progr ess, which has a tremend ous impact on human we ll-bei ng a nd o n th e

thre e dimens ions of sustaina ble dev elopme nt,

Noti ng with conce rn also that cl imate chan ge is one of the fact ors that can

exac erbate the global water stre ss an d the need for clima te ad aptation stra tegies to

addr ess wat er issu es, and ac knowled ging th at disa sters, many o f which are

exac erbated by clim ate c hange and are in creasin g in freq uency and in tensity,

signi ficantl y impede progre ss towar ds susta inable d evelopm ent,

Stres sing th e impor tance of the eco system app roach f or the int egrated

mana gement of l and, water and living resour ces an d the need to increas e effo rts to

tackl e desert ificatio n, land d egradati on, drou ght, wat er scarci ty, biodiv ersity lo ss and

poll ution,

Noti ng t he impor tance of water e cosystem s and w ater qua lity for mitigati ng the

risk of h ealth cha llenges in a ccordan ce with the O ne Health a pproach an d other

holi stic appro aches that d eliver mul tiple bene fits to the hea lth and well -bein g of

peop le, anim als, pla nts and ecosys tems,

Reco gniz ing tha t w ater-rel ated iss ues, inc luding the relev ant Sus tainable

Deve lopment Go als and target s, need to be better re flected in the ag endas of the

Gene ral Assem bly and the Eco nomic a nd Socia l Counc il,
