2011 Best Reviewer Awards for CGIR

Here at Corporate Governance: An International Review (CGIR), we are fortunate to have many

talented and dedicated individuals who offer their time and expertise to do reviewing for our

journal. We are currently fortunate to have 33 dedicated and proven governance scholars serving

on our editorial review board, and over 2,000 ad hoc reviewers in our online database. Of course,

some individuals work harder and provide consistently exemplary work for the journal for

reasons only known to them. Notably, all of this work is voluntary and the only compensation

provided is a free subscription to the journal and a listing on our masthead for those who serve

on our editorial review board.Clearly, this professionalismand dedication needs to be recognized

and celebrated.

In order to recognize some of the truly exceptionalreviewers here at CGIR, the journal conducts

an annual “best reviewer” award in order to recognize those individuals who truly stand out.

Listed below are the previous award winners:

2. 2008 – Eduardo Schiehll, PhD, HEC Montreal, Canada

3. 2009 – David O’Donnell, PhD, Intellectual Capital Research Institute, Ireland

4. 2010 – Andrea Mellis, PhD, University of Cagliari, Italy

5. 2010 – Alessandro Minichilli, PhD, Bocconi University, Italy

In 2011, I am pleased to announce that Professor Steven Gove who is a strategic management

scholar at Virginia Tech University is our newest reviewer to be recognized for his contributions

to the f‌ield of comparative corporate governance and our journal. Steve has served on our

editorial board since 2009 after being brought to our attention by Brian Boyd, and he has

consistently provided high quality and timely reviews. In the most recent year, Steve “upped his

game” by handling eight different manuscripts and earned an average reviewer score of 2.86 (out

of a perfect 3.00). Importantly, Steve’s reviews not only critiqued the manuscripts thoroughly, but

he also provided constructive comments about what he liked, and how the paper could be

improved.

In addition to Dr. Gove, we would also like to recognize Professor Kurt Desender as our

“rising star” reviewer. Kurt is an Assistant Professor in Accounting who is aff‌iliated with Carlos

III University in Madrid, Spain. He was brought to our attention by one of our Associate Editors,

Ruth Aguilera, and we are glad that she did. Kurt handled a considerable workload in 2011–12

manuscripts, but he still maintained a remarkable average reviewer score – 2.67. Kurt consistently

provides timely and comprehensive reviews, and he demonstrates a considerable mastery of the

burgeoning corporate governance literature for such a young scholar.

As a token of our appreciation for Steve and Kurt’s service to the journal, we will be providing

them each with a plaque, similar to our previous distinguished award winners. While this plaque

could never compensate them for their many years of training and expertise as well as their many

hours of extraordinary service to the journal, it is a tangible symbol of their generous and

professional contributions to the comparative corporate governance scholarship. On behalf of the

Wiley-Blackwell and CGIR, we celebrate scholars such as Drs. Gove and Desender and their

service to the f‌ield.
