2007 Best Paper Announcement
Please join us in congratulating the authors of the award-
winning papers published in 2007 (volume 15) of Corporate
Governance: An International Review. The nomination criteria
included the following three standards: (1) the research
question and findings must be highly relevant to practitio-
ners and/or policy-makers, (2) the research study must
be both theoretically and methodologically rigorous, and
(3) the research must be published in 2007.
Using these three criteria, nominations were made by
members of our distinguished Editorial Advisory Board –
many of whom have direct, first-hand working experience
in dealing with the challenges confronting corporations
from their respective regions all over the world. Of the 110
articles published in 2007, six articles were nominated to
be considered for our best paper distinction. Next, our
Associate Editors personally read each of the six articles
and ranked them independently in terms of rigor and
relevance.
While this was an extremely challenging task, it was inter-
esting to note the relatively high level of inter-rater agree-
ment between our Associate Editors. Accordingly, it is my
pleasure to announce that the “best paper” award winner
for 2007 was authored by Yuan Ding (Chinese European
International Business School), Hua Zhang (Chinese
European International Business School) and Junxi Zhang
(University of Hong Kong).
More formally, the “Best Paper Award” citation is as
follows:
Ding, Y., Zhang, H. & Zhang, J. 2007. Private versus state
ownership and earnings management: Evidence from
Chinese listed companies, Corporate Governance: An
International Review, 15(2): 223–238.
The runner-up award winner for 2007 was authored by
Gavin Nicholson (Queensland University of Technology)
and Geoffrey Kiel (University of Queensland), both of which
hail from Brisbane, Australia.
Specifically, the “Runner-Up Award” citation is as
follows:
Nicholson, G. & Kiel, G. 2007. Can directors impact
performance? A case-based test of three theories of corpo-
rate governance. Corporate Governance: An International
Review, 15(4): 585–608.
Congratulations to these authors for their significant con-
tributions to the international corporate governance litera-
ture. If you would like to read their articles, we commend
you to the Wiley Interscience website.
