  • Venezuela responsible for the death of cadet of the National Guard

    Venezuela is responsible for failing to guarantee the rights to life and personal integrity to the detriment of a student of the Cordero National Guard Training School (ESGUARNAC), as concluded by the Inter-American Court in its sentence issued on August 22, 2017 and released on 13 October. The Court also found that Venezuela violated the cadet's parents' right to access to justice for processing the case before military jurisdiction, for deficiencies in the investigation and prosecution, and because of continued impunity to date.   • UN Human Rights and the IACHR categorically reject a bill that expands the jurisdiction of military tribunals in Brazil

    The Office for South America of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organization of American States (OAS) express deep concern about the recent approval by the Brazilian Congress of a bill (PL 44/2016) that modifies the Military Penal Code so that the intentional killings of civilians committed by agents of the Armed Forces are tried by military courts.   • Report on the 164th Special Session of the IACHR.

    The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) held the 164th Special Session in Mexico City, from September 4 to 8, 2017, at the invitation of the Mexican State. During this session, the IACHR analyzed draft thematic reports, analyzed requests for precautionary measures and reviewed and approved thematic reports, as well as petition and case reports.   • Process to analyze if the situation in Venezuela deserves to be transferred to the International Criminal Court

    The Secretary-General, in his report of July 17, 2017, considered that there is evidence that "points to the systematic, tactical and strategic use of murder, imprisonment, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence as tools to terrorize the Venezuelan people" which could be considered crimes against humanity to be investigated by the International Criminal Court, this and other considerations are in the published fact sheet on the analysis of this process.     The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) today issued a report on measures aimed at reducing the use of pre-trial detention in America. The arbitrary and illegal application of pretrial detention is a chronic problem in the region. The non-exceptional use of this measure is one of the most serious and widespread problems facing member states of the Organization of American States (OAS) regarding respect for and guarantee of the rights of persons deprived of their liberty.   • Visit of former Attorney General of Venezuela to the Inter-American Court

    The President of the Inter-American Court received the former Attorney General of Venezuela, at the seat of the Tribunal.     The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expresses its deep concern about the deaths of ten migrant persons detained in the custody of the United States of America Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Fiscal year 2017, which began on October 1, 2016 and will end on September 30, 2017.
