Domingo L. Siazon named UNIDO Chief

Domingo L. Siazon of the Philippines was elected by acclamation on 17 August as the first Director-General of The United Nations Industrial-Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations newest specialized agency. The UNIDO General Conference specified that he was to serve for a four-year term beginning no later than 1 September.

Mr. Siazon had been recommended by UNIDO's Industrial Development Board (IDB), on the basis of a simple majority of 24 voters out of 53, the final in a series of five secret ballots.

After being sworn in, Mr. Siazon paid tribute to UNIDO's outgoing Executive Director, Abd-El Rahman Khane, "for his more than 10 years of dedicated and remarkable service to UNIDO during some of the most difficult periods in the history of the organization."

Mr. Siazon has served as his country's Ambassador to Austria and as its Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Vienna, to the International Atomic Energy Agency and to UNIDO.

During its five-day meeting (12-17 August) in Vienna, the Conference also elected the 53 members to the IDB and the 27 members to a newly established Programme and Budget Committee.

Speaking on behalf of the Secretary-General, Carl-August Fleischhauer, Under-Secretary General for Legal Affairs, said that UNIDO's conversion to the Unied Nations sixteenth specialized agency added further significance to the fortieth anniversary celebration this year.
